Consumption vs Creation

We talk about limiting content consumption by looking at a ratio of consumption to creation

mileposts podcast - episode 12 - consumption vs creation

What's up guys. It's Loren with another episode of the milepost podcast. This one's going to be short and sweet, and it's something that I've been really thinking about a lot towards the end of April and in the last several days. And,  that is about content consumption versus content creation and trying to figure out how can I start tracking consumption so that.

[00:00:22] Content creation, proceeds, consumption, or at least keeps into a constant ratio. So for every two hours of video that you watch, how much video do I need to create. What is an ideal ratio for SaaS company in consumption versus creation or for a content creator? If you listen to successful creators, a lot of times they will tell you, I don't watch a lot of YouTube.

[00:00:54] I don't have time. I'm creating my own content. So.  May for me is all about reducing consumption and upping the content creation. And I'm trying to figure out how to measure it cause I don't really have a way to measure. All I know is that in late March and throughout April, the content consumption went off the charts. The social media use went a little sideways spending way more time than I normally do. Reading news. We don't have television at home. We don't have broadcast television home, we have Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and so on, but we don't watch the news. I kind of have turned the news off in my life many years ago, and it's been a huge benefit.

[00:01:40] But the amount of Netflix, bingeing and other things late into the night has gone way off the charts. And at one time last year, I canceled Netflix cause every time I'd watched Netflix, I may have mentioned this on a previous episode, but every time I watched Netflix, I felt miserable for the next two days.

[00:01:58] And that's kind of, impacted my life again, here in 2020 because we have Netflix again. We have a CBS all access for star Trek. We have Amazon prime. We've got a borrowed Disney plus account. We've got Hulu. you know, we've got YouTube. There were drowning and things to watch and to listen to. And then we've got podcasts.

[00:02:25] So  during this whole shelter in place, people  say, quarantine locked down. Nobody's locked in their houses. Nobody's quarantined in their house. this is shelter and place. This is social distancing. So, you know, I've been leaving her pretty regularly. but, not as much as I will be going forward, but.

[00:02:45]you know, the amount of time spent consuming content has gone off the charts. In a previous episode, I talked a little bit about imposter syndrome in content creation, and the challenges I've faced are on doing any kind of podcast or audio video work or. you know, doing screencasts and so forth at home with the kids in the house with their constant chatter or their constant noise and with their doing school from home over zoom and over Google classroom and so forth.

[00:03:17]you know, it's just not conducive to, to creating content at home. But. At the same time, content  consumption has gone way up. So I'm trying to figure out how to measure  content consumption to creation and trying to figure out if I can measure it, what is the ideal ratio, to, to make that work.

[00:03:39] .

[00:03:39] if I had to go back in time, I try to figure out how to, you know, hit the reset button in mid April after taxes got sorted and so forth. But, you know, I did accomplish a ton of good stuff in March and early  April with respect to finances.

[00:03:54] I'll mention that on another episode where it's worth talking about, kind of clearing up the personal finances so that I'm less stressed, paying off some debt and all that kind of junk.

[00:04:05] I may need to dust off the rescue time app . See if I can figure out how much content I'm actually watching. I don't know if that'll work or not. Any suggestions or just kind of noting it a little bit so that I can keep track of the amount of time spent versus creation? One thing I can do is log blog posts and vlogging and an audio and video creation.

[00:04:29] I might factor this into my Q2 goals, is that ratio. Of consumption to creation.  I don't know what the ratio needs to be, but that might be an interesting goal to experiment with, given the environment. Alright. Hey, that's all I want to talk about.

[00:04:44] I'll keep it short and sweet consumption versus creation. So thanks for tuning in. Take care. Bye.
